Concert Review #3

Tamara Bedricky

So I am watching TB [Tamara Bedricky] right now at Oakland University in a little-coffee-house-type-thing they have at the student center. It’s my first time back to OU [Oakland University] since they remodeled the student center…it’s pretty pimp! When I get a camera (next toy purchase) I’ll take some pics and post them. The show tonight is a “storytellers” type of show…anyone ever watch VH1: Storytellers? Basically you have a band or artist play a small concert venue (a la coffee house or small stage scene) and in between songs they tell you about themselves, the songs, tours, albums…it’s story-time and they are the storyteller. That style of show is one of my favorite styles of shows; you get to see a little more into people who write the music you love. Just like art, it’s always nice to know what the song is really about; rather then what you think it’s about!

I missed the first song or two, but I just walked in and grabbed a seat in the corner so I can type away without anyone noticing the nerd typing away on his PDA. :) She just finished “Head over heels” and started giving a little insight into her song “still in my veins”…”it’s not a total rip off from John Mayer…” she starts out…his song was about losing someone and hers is really about a relationship that was not going to work out -the catch? She wrote it before it ended knowing that it was going to end, so it might be a bad thing if the guy knew that.

Other then singing this was the most words I have heard her speak so I got a kick out of her jokes and how personal she was with the crowd. She laughed about how a lot of her songs focus on being in love and it’s kinda funny singing them now when she is not in love anymore. At one point she started playing and bumped the mic with her mouth stopped and told a quick story about how she chipped her tooth on a mic at one show out of state.

That was the lead into “beautiful”. Every person I have gone to see Tamara with, from the first time I saw her open for Josh Kelley to a show last month: loves this song. If I loaned them a CD, they love this song. Which is probably why it was also chosen to be played on TV – Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Girl [112:Kristin M.:Wedding Episode] played the song in it’s entirety. The version she played was redone from Cd version…and I am pretty sure it was the same as Magic Bag version I saw last month. Love it!

Next “tell me why”…for her good friend James, a good friend for life. Brief comments about James and their long talks…leading into “Coming clean” with a little different guitar solo that had a cooler fast type sound – bonus!

Then comes the work in progress song that when finished I think could top “beautiful”. Some of the lyrics:

“I want to taste it on your lips…I feel like we connected…got me thinking of you…its too bad it didn’t work out..”

The first cover song I have heard her play, “Linger” and it was pretty good! There were a few jokes about remembering the words, but from what I remember (and that was high school days) she was damn close. Some die-hard fans knew her for playing it, requested it…since it was at OU (where she went to school) with OU fans…why not?

A few more tracks (see track listing) played and then it was time for the last song, “so am I”. A personal song and “a get through it type of song” per Tamara. Give you the “hang tough” motivation. This past year was her toughest year for her personally and the last song she wrote for her album.

She’s playing again in two weeks at the Motor City Music Conference; I’ve got my fingers crossed I’ll hear my favorite song there or at least get to hear the work in progress song again…

Happy Holidays

Wow it’s the holidays again and lord knows I still need to do my shopping. I have no idea what to get uncle Joe or my great aunt Sue. I’ll be embarrassed like I am every year and have to quickly go to the dollar store before it closes and wrap the presents in last Sunday’s comics. Happy Holidays from BD@BS!!

The more info the better

I finally added content to my pseudo-resume; some details omitted for obvious reasons. My Amazon Wish list, 100 things about me and my friendster profile are all listed under my profile now (and have been…). I also adjusted some colors and the way links work just to make the page a little more pleasing to the eye. I still have some layout changes I want to work on; but I’ll save that for the weekend.

Cheers to my fellow Irish folks! Happy St. Patty’s Day!!

Where in the hell #1

Humor me, it’s been a little bit

“Where in the Hell #1” wow, things are tough when you spoof yourself you know (ala “What The Hell #”)? :) I have a long overdue update and some news to share.

On with the show…

I have been a little busier at the office then usual lately and I like writing on scrap paper (a.k.a. MS Word docs or the like) throughout my day; be it composing a post or just jotting little things that I want to blog about later. With the increase in work, I just haven’t had the time or I keep losing my thoughts. By the time I get home I am spent mentally. How annoying!! I have a few posts that I will be putting up in the next few days; rather then back post I figure they are good for future posts. Hey it’s my frigging blog so back off…I’m not recycling posts! :)

Updates…

School: I will be registering for classes come April 1st; so I will be going back to finish up my last eight (8) classes. I can’t say enough how thankful I am that I will get a chance to finish what I started and be given an opportunity to push myself so I can go further then I ever thought I would go. I was in a funk for a long time; but I climbed out of a hole that spanned almost seven (7) full years. All I can say is “Look out world, I’m on my way!”

Work: This summer marks my twelfth (12) year working in an office doing computer work. I have gone through burn out twice; the second time being the most stressful and depressing. I have climbed out of that hole as well and I am looking to move to the next level of “skills” –if you will. Beyond that I have been looking into second jobs and I have even gone on a few interviews. So far I think I might be nuts combining a full-time forty (40) hour five (5) day work week type of job/career with a part-time twenty (20) hours per week over seven (7) possible days type of job. Not to mention going to school and volunteering. Pretty much I am asking to get burned out…so I have a few other thoughts on the horizon. When I hear back from my last string of interviews I’ll comment more. No need to jinx myself!!

Library & Museum: I started volunteering at a small private (wannabe public) library and museum in February of last year. My interest in art, architecture and preserving history brought me to this small group whom I work with on a regular basis. I was placed on the board of directors shortly after coming into the group and given an officer position right away…secretary. Hey every corporation needs someone in charge of the corporate records right? That was me. Last month I was promoted to be the vice president of the board of directors. Needless to say I was both honored and grateful that the board of directors has such a trust in me. I could not ask for better real-world experience beyond what I have already. I also find great meaning in the work that I do and the people I work with. I couldn’t ask for a greater reward.

Personal: No luck on finding Miss right; although Miss Close-enough-for-now has been coming around with her friends quite often lately. I’m not finding myself willing to settle, nor have a little fun; but I guess that’s the next level in growing up I wasn’t planning on hitting anytime soon. ;)

Books: Wow, I have read a few great ones recently and I have a few more I can’t wait to read on my shelf. I even wrote another book review and I have another partially finished. I’ll be publishing both here within the next week.

Fun: I am excited to say that I am reading Leadership; by Rudolph Giuliani. Wait, why am I mentioning that here? Well he is coming in April to a local college to talk about the leadership topics and team structuring he discusses in his book; as well as expanding on some points. I recently asked for the day off of work and I just received confirmation today that my tickets are secured. 9/11 brought more about him into the spotlight for most Americans, including me. Looking at him pre-9/11, I have a high respect for Rudy as a leader and his willingness to try new (untested) ideas. The more I learned about him, the more I wanted to learn about his business and leadership tactics. He is the first person I will meet (hear speak) on a long list of “People I want to meet” list. While not too exciting to many people, it means something to me.

Enough babbling and rambling for now, I have a confession Wednesday to plan for tomorrow!

My blog is void of thought

Like a few of my fellow bloggers, I have been on a mini break…work has been on overdrive for me this week. End of month and end of fiscal year information and decisions need to be made and for some reason my office thinks I have some input that is worth while. Awesome. Now if I just knew what “input” was. Things are busy, but I am happy to say that I am busy working on what I enjoy the most right now.

-=NERD ALERT=-
I am currently pricing out all new computer equipment for our office; I’m looking to roll-out an entire new infrastructure [backbone] that will allow our company to flex our creative muscle while (hopefully) allowing room for growth over a five year period. It has been a long time spent in planning for me. Between budget cuts and other setbacks it has been a reality I have been holding out for.

-=TANGENT ALERT=-
You see, my dream job is to start my own company where I help business rebuild themselves from the inside. Every business process, every step in the line, every bit that becomes a byte I want to make more efficient, effective and accurate. I want to expand my firm to employ people that help companies improve employee moral; help their company find their missing passion and make it their new drive.

I am not looking to be rich in terms currency, but rich in my heart. What measurable would that be then? Passionate, innovative, creative emotions. For me there is no greater wealth.

Why is this what I have been holding out for? Well it was almost time for me to look for a new job; to give up on this one. I hate giving up. That is one of my greatest strengths and my greatest weaknesses. This stepping stone of an experience was losing its stock value with every few months that passed. Not because of some missing computer equipment: because of missing drive. No job is perfect and in seeing that, no office is perfect either. Problems will always be barriers -only if you let them be. Our company has been letting the cruxes stay cruxes. Our issues became holes that swallowed our passions, our drive and our moral. The same story has been told before; just by a different view, by a different person at a different company.

I feel change is on the horizon and I will not be let down. Change is hard to accept for some. I am looking forward to it, and all of the struggles, lessons and improvements it will bring.

“Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.”
– King Whitney Jr.

While I am lacking in posting I am not lacking in my other [new] passion: reading. I have been trying to read and relax when I come home so as I don’t lose the “creative kick” I am on right now. I finished another book this week and I am half way through a new one. I had a few suggested short stories by a coworker that I will have to read and report back on. With every sentence I read I feel like I am relearning emotions through the eyes of others and seeing subjects in new lights, or just reaffirming old concepts.

“Everybody has the ability to free associate, but society tends to frown on active fantasies. Beyond a certain age, we stop playing games, ‘let’s pretend’, ‘what if,’ and all that. It goes on in your head anyway, but at some point you start to feel guilty. You know, you listen to a symphony and imagine that you’re the conductor, and there you are, conducting like crazy, but then you get to be a grown man, and you say, ‘Gee, I’d hate for anybody to know that I’m pretending I’m conducting the symphony.’ But that kind of fantasy life is the real key to problem solving at every level. It’s certainly the primary tool for problem solving in art, whether it’s painting or dancing or choreography or directing films or writing scripts or writing novels or whatever.” Creative problem solving is a form of innovative learning.
– Snipped from: On Becoming a Leader, The Leadership Classic; Updated and Expanded; By: Warren Bennis; pg.69; Comment from movie director Pollack

Tuesday night I read this paragraph and I felt at peace that it’s okay for me to dream the way I dream and pretend the way I pretend. My imagination is one thing I pray I will never lose and second on my list of “endless supply” possessions I want with me if I am ever trapped on a desert island. First on the list? My mind.

Porn, DVD, TV, electricity, Playboy Playmates, condoms, alcohol, clean water, food and books fighting out for the spots ranked third through tenth of course. I’m not that intellectual after all.

Enjoy the weekend!
