Thanks for crapping in my hat

If you don’t watch sports on TV, you might not know that the Detroit Tigers are in the World Series…the last time they won was 1984. Needless to say the city is hopping with people and fans of all ages.

If you don’t know, I spend a lot of my free time in Detroit working with various groups to try and help out the city and save some of it’s history. One thing Detroit needs is people…foot traffic, so that the city itself can bounce back. There has been so much revitalization in the city over the years it’s beginning to all pay off. Now with another sports team doing well I can see more people coming down for games next season.

Today I’ve feeling positive, etc etc…then I read this clown’s comments. I’d like to say what I really think of him, but I’m sure if he were to respond he would just say I was being “true Detroit”.

“The situation in Detroit won’t magically remedy itself no matter how well the Tigers play next week. But since every one’s been playing badminton with the word ‘miracle’ lately, why not let the miracles rain? Let the 2006 Tigers, with their shiny new downtown ballpark, resuscitate the failing heart of Motown. And let Detroit have its fun while it lasts, and from our high perch over here in the rest of the country, we can look on, beaming.”

9 is no more

Yup, no more 9…we are 8. What am I talking about? Pluto is no longer considered a planet by the International Astronomical Union.

I’ll have to burn my old science books now. I mean we can’t have bad data floating around now can we?

Good story

Just a touching story I have to share.

A man was on vacation in Kenya. While he was walking through the bush, he came across an elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed so the man approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant’s foot. There was a large thorn deeply embedded in the bottom of the foot. As carefully and as gently as he could he removed the thorn and the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather stern look on its face, stared at him. For a good ten minutes the man stood frozen — thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away.

For years after, the man remembered the elephant and the events of that day. One day the man was walking through the zoo with his son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to where they were standing at the rail. It stared at him and the man couldn’t help wondering if this was the same elephant. After a while it trumpeted loudly; then it continued to stare at him. The man summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, gently reached down with its trunk, picked the man up and slammed him to the ground killing him instantly.

Probably wasn’t the same elephant.

SUV vs. Electric car

Did you know that over 100 years ago there were more electric cars on the road than gas? Me either. However, it’s true. The first gas/electric hybrid was built with power steering…in 1903.

What am I getting at? Where is the story? The Smithsonian decides to take out and store a GM EV1 -the only one that is still intact. What’s that? The GM EV1 is the only mass-produced electric car that was EVER made (currently electric cars are not mass-produced).

It must be stored to be replaced with something more important, like a Ford Model-T or something…right? Wrong. A Robotic VW Touareg will take it’s place. Well that’s kinda interesting considering the opening of the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?” shows GM in a negative view and GM is one of the museum’s largest financial supporters. I mean, why else would a environment unfriendly SUV trump the last existing environment friendly “vehicle of the future”?

Politics. You love it.

You’re fired

A friend of a friend made the news in a typical “grey area” situation the news likes to jump all over. If you have not yet heard an art teacher has been suspended and may lose her job for topless photos of her that appear online.

The photos were taken by a photographer whose pages I visit often (no…not for the nude content) and whose work I admire. A highly professional artistic photographer takes photos of an artistic person, who happens to be an art teacher. The school finds out and all hell breaks loose.

I know where my opinion stands, but alas, my views are never in the popularity when it comes to expression.
