Last night I went to a concert thinking I was going to see Duncan Sheik with some friends. Walking up the stairs to the venue I was reminded that Sarah Bettens [band recall: K’s Choice] was opening…I was in for a good show in a small venue.
Sarah Bettens, David Poe and Duncan Sheik would play an awesome show this night. Switching musicians around, playing solo, running acoustic guitars through loopers and drum machines to sound like full bands. Duncan would be joined by his 6 guitars and lead bassist with 2 bass guitars. You know me, you know my rants. I could talk [type] for hours about how the music was great…but that’s not what I want to focus on.
This night was about The Yellow Umbrella Tour; and I had no idea what that was until a short film was played explaining just what the tour was all about. The video started with the story of Christine Baze and her battle with Cervical Cancer.
Created by PopSmear.org, the goal of the Tour is to bring awareness and information to women around the country about cervical cancer and the virus that causes it, HPV. PopSmear.org’s founder, Christine Baze, was diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer in 2000. After numerous surgeries and treatments, Christine was grateful for her life, and decided to make a difference.

Hearing Christine’s inspiring story and listening to her emotionally driven music -some of which that helped her through the roughest of times, struck a cord…and hit home. I’ll talk more about that some other time…
I urge women to get additional information on HPV and the HPV Test, ask your doctor about the test and tell your friends. If found early HPV is curable.
Check to see if the tour is coming to a city near you. Tickets are around $20 and the talent is well worth seeing.
Lisa Loeb
Yes Lisa Loeb. You might remember her song “Stay” from the 90’s hit movie Reality Bites. Well she has made many albums and had a few songs in various films since then…and I’ve always been a fan. I own every album. I’ve seen her in concert three times. I’ve talked to her after her shows twice. I’ve a huge fan. :)

The night started out a little rough for me. I had an exam on Monday night…a half day off-site today…and an exam tonight before the show. I bought these tickets before school started and I wasn’t going to miss Lisa! I studied my butt off to the point I think I knew enough to confuse myself during my exam…but I made it out and drove an hour to the venue -Lisa came on 10 minutes after finding my friends and my saved seat.
the show…
I got settled just in time to soak in the venue with the lights up, the crowd seated; anticipating and restless. A small venue. My favorite setting for acoustic shows…now I just had to hope the sound was good. We were seated in the back and pictures were just not possible when the lights dropped…no worries, I just hoped she met with fans after the show.
I went planing to shout out any one of three songs I wanted to hear; when she told the audience at the start she was going to take requests and play some old songs I lit up. Before her third song she broke into a story I thought I herd once before about a song she wrote for a movie, that ended up not being in a move…but I couldn’t place when I heard it, nor the song. “Truthfully” -my #1 song to shout out as a request. After another 5 or 6 songs it was request time, my friends and I shouted “Falling in love” loud, but it sounded like we lost out to someone else’s request. Nope! We win!! We didn’t get as lucky for our third request (“How”), but we were up for the night since my friends wanted to hear “Sandalwood” and Lisa played that sans request.
Lisa played about 15 songs (set list at home, posted later) and they all sounded great. The stage sound and the venue sound (removal of the audience’s sounds) was probably one of the best I have ever heard for an acoustic stage or for a small venue. At one point she played “Catch the moon”, a quiet song she wrote for a children’s book with a friend…the audience was so captivated you could have heard a pin drop. I couldn’t have asked for a better treat after a long week of studying and running around. There was one more surprise in store…

Lisa announced she would be signing CDs and meeting fans after the show. I made sure to buy her new album (since I was missing it) and have her sign it…and of course I took a picture too. We got a few seconds to chat while she signed the autograph; but I didn’t ask her when she would be making me gingerbread pancakes (inside joke with online fans)…maybe next time.
This might not really be Concert #8, I have a few reviews I need to do so I am planing ahead! :)

Marinating or marinate
I challenge you to use the word “marinate” in any of its conjunctions (I think they’re called conjunctions) whenever you have to tell someone you have to pee…for the entire month of October. What am I talking about? Kids say the darndest things: see what I mean.
Right, So hopefully you just read that…
As a new feature I’ll find a obscure word for a random routine task and challenge you to use it. The best part is that you can thank me for your soon-to-be new blog content on the funny stories that ensue after you complete the challenge! Oh…the stories can be flat out lies too! Who the heck is going to challenge your story??
Want more fun? This can even be a twist on Pee Wee’s Playhouse where whenever someone uses the word in a blog, you can “scream” in their comments. Ha! Who said the internet isn’t fun? Oh, you never saw Pee Wee’s Playhouse? Well the idea is when someone says the word of the day you scream. Simple.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to marinate.
So it begins!
I can’t believe this is one of the first things on 43 things that I added to my list; it was never that huge of a dream, more of an interest.
Last week per a conversation with a few friends, the decision to write a book came up and now one of my friends and I have started down the path. We had a nice brainstorming session last night and drummed up a few tasks…now we start with some paperwork formalities, then we’re off!
It’s a two year project; but as Lao-tzu said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
